Grain follows the form

A material wrapped around a volume has to survive the ellipse. Straight hatch on a curved body looks like a label.

  1. 1

    Find the axis

On a turned leg or a column, grain runs with the axis or rings around it. Both are believable. A diagonal that does neither is a mistake.

  2. 2

    Compress with the ellipse

Lines around a cylinder get closer together at the sides, where the surface turns away. That crowding is the form, not extra decoration.

  3. 3

    Leave the light

Material is most visible in the halftone. The highlight can stay blank. A texture that covers the highlight kills the light you already decided.

Drill

Treat it as turned timber or cast concrete. Let the mark wrap, and leave the lit side quieter.
