Draw the holes

The chair is hard because the legs are thin. The spaces between them are simple shapes, and they are easier to see.

  1. 1

    Name the gaps

Under the seat, between the legs, inside the back. Each gap has a shape. Draw that shape as if it were a solid object.

  2. 2

    The wood is the leftover

When the holes are the right width, the legs appear on their own. Do not start with the legs and hope the gaps behave.

  3. 3

    Compare widths

Ask which gap is wider: under the seat, or between the feet. Draw that ratio before you add detail.

Draw the enclosed gaps first. Leave the wood as what remains.
