Three weights

A drawing with one weight looks like a diagram. Weight tells you which edge is near, which is a profile, and which is only a guide.

Profile — where the form meets airContour — an edge you meanConstruction — a line you may loseThe outside outweighs the inside.
  1. 1

    Profile is heaviest

The line where the object meets air gets the most pressure. Interior edges — a label, a seam — stay light.

  2. 2

    Weight follows light

Press harder where the form turns away from the light, and on the underside. The top edge can stay thin.

  3. 3

    Construction disappears

A searching line is allowed, but it should be lighter than the decision. If every line shouts, nothing is the contour.

Drill

Use hairline for searching, a middle line for seams, and the heavy line only for the outer profile.
