Cut the room

A section is where a sketch becomes a way of thinking about a building. Cut, then show what is beyond.

  1. 1

    Ground line first

Heavier than anything else. The building sits on it. A section with a timid ground line looks like it is floating.

  2. 2

    Poche the cut

Walls and floors the knife passes through are filled or hatched solid. Openings are interruptions in that fill, not extra lines.

  3. 3

    Beyond is lighter

A door in the far wall, a person for scale, a window reveal. Those lines are thinner than the cut. Eye level is a tick at about 1.6 meters — useful, and usually left in.

Drill

Ground line heaviest. Fill whatever the cut passes through. Keep things beyond the cut lighter.
