Hatching that turns
A hatch that ignores the form is a wallpaper. On a cylinder, the lines wrap.

Follow the section
On a cylinder, hatch along the ellipse or straight across the axis — pick one and keep it. Lines that run randomly flatten the tube.

Space is the tone
Pressing harder is one way to go darker. Moving the lines closer is the better one. The light side can be bare paper.

Stop at the contour
Hatch ends at the edge. Lines that shoot past the silhouette undo the volume you just drew.
Critique
Drill
Hatch the shadow side only. Let the lines bunch up at the core and open toward the light.
